Final Playoffs: The Dust/Snow Mixture Settles/Melts

What an exciting finale to the Fall League.  Seriously, if ever there was a time for exclamation points, it would be now.

Congratulations to our victors, the Red-Eye Rockets who upset the formidable Navy Blue Magic twice to claim their prize, the fabled Golden Bucket.

The Champions, the Red Eye Red Rockets.  Sorry so blurry.
Here's how the playoff bracket shook out.  Matt Williams was the only player to not play awesome.

Fall 2011 Bracket

See you around for Winter League!  It is rumored to start at 5.30 on Wednesday Evenings.  Also, don't miss New Year's Day Ultimate at Memorial at high noon.  Bring your worst holiday gift for the traditional Regifting.

I'm out, but it's been an honor and a pleasure this Fall.  Thanks to all the captains and reporters and players and new friends for making it happen.  See you on the field.

Playoffs Round 2: The Dust Turns Into Snow and Swirls More Ferociously!

Aloha,

The Famer's Almanac said we were due for something, but only ray'sweather knew that it would drop 20 degrees in about 2 hours Wednesday afternoon.  But nothing can temper an ultimate player when he's got the playoffs in his/her veins.  Well, it seemed to slow some down, as a total of 10 people were at the fields when the conch horn sounded the beginning of the 5.30 game.

At 5.30
Graphite vs. Baby Blue.
The Baby Blue team began to arrive in a trickle, and then they turned into a river.  Apparently gumptioned by their first loss in the brackets last week to Navy Blue, the team had plenty of motivated players.  Meanwhile, Graphite topped out with 5, and played the first half down two players.  And still, due to some stellar play and at least one flying layout D by Dan New Baby Daddy Manget, they only officially forfeited when the score was 6-3 and one of their players decided to begin his long drove home early.  Baby Blue.
and
the Scruffy Unicorns mustered enough players to meet Green&Tonic 7 on 7.  The tone was set early by the weather.  People, the snow was coming down in curtains.  The cones quickly blew away after I tried to set them down, and scores typically only went one way.  Huck and Zone would've been a good strategy, had you been able to Huck in a direction of your choice.  But as the weather got worse, the dedication in all players showed, and it turned into an amazing game; just the kind of incredulous heart that the game's all about.  Green&Tonic won to advance, 8-4 I believe.  Here's a picture I tried to take.

at 7.00
Baby Blue stayed around for the additional 15 minutes to see if their opponent, Gold Rush, would arrive.  Alas, only 4 hearty members of their roster were on hand.  A shame Gold's attendance issues left their teammates in the cold.  (ha?)  Their stalwart loyalists stuck around for a brief pickup game, but most of Baby Blue was happy to accept their second forfeit of the night and get in their cars a little sooner.
and
Green&Tonic took on Tighty Whiteys in G&T's second game of the evening.  I didn't see too much of the game, but I saw some nice flow and tosses, despite the elements, from some of White's stars.  White wins.

at 8.30
the Bonobos took on Navy Blue in the playoff semis.  Again, I was playing and didn't see much, but can surmise from drinking with reps from both teams afterwards that it was pretty spirited game with more of Navy Blue's characteristic domination by their deep and talented roster.  Navy Blue
and
"Though it was epically cold out, Redeye Redrockets and P.P.P.P.. had a good turn out. Feet and fingers froze within the first 5 min and the game was already intense. P.P.P... took the lead at 3-0, but each point was long and hard fought by both teams. RR came up through the windy conditions to take half at 8-7. With many fouls, travels and intense lay outs for those floaty discs, RR came out at hard cap with 11-9." - Natalie Wolfe.  Red wins.

So the bracket has come to this!  See you Saturday; every team has a game, as scheduled below.  And if you can't make it to your game, then at least come Saturday evening to the Altamont Brewery in West Asheville, where the victors will be crowned and then the victors of bar games will be crowned.

Playoffs Round I: The Dust Swirls

Evening!

Our first week of playoffs featured some of the most astonishing and breath-taking feats of athleticism that I've ever imagined to have actually happened.  Here are the results..

at 5.30
in a round that started late due to lights delay, Pink upset Graphite, 12-6.  "fun to play with Ethan and vs Harris.  good spirit all around" - Keith
and
"Green and Tonic took to the frigid field this past Wednesday with great heart even though their bearded captain suffered a club foot and could not play.  G&T gained the first point, and the game went back and forth twixt the teams until Baby Blue decided to take the lead.  Many more things happened ending with a loss for Green, 7-14."-ET

then at 7.00
"purple and pink played a tight game first half, purple took half 8-6 and slowly pulled away to win 13-7ish?
we missed you! felice-" (that's my wife) "-played real well- 3 scores i think- she would have had one more but i over shot her!" - Mark Strazzer 13-7 Purple
and
B. Blue lost to the 1. seeded N. Blue, 7-15.  Can anyone stop the Magic?

at 8.30
"White scored first for the break. Walt had a crucial turn on our end
zone allowing for this opportunity. From there we straightened up.
Maroon took the game 15-6. Believe we were 8-3 at half, @ 12-3 white
made a three point run. May want to fact check with CT and Katie.

I burned Ari deep kicking in the turbo. Ari burned me deep, "I got you
back" Juliette's hands were made of krazy glue and she caught e'ry
thing with one hand. We were a well oiled machine playing smart and
controlled. Sam Fontaine showed off his b-ball skills and cat like
reflexes on D, and while going up for a disc against A.Hartnagel
mis-read and like a ninja bid for the catch and the score." - Mateo Gordon

and
Red defeated the Gold Rush, whose attendance seemed to be an issue.  Where are the pre-season favorites?

Check out the bracket below for game times.  All teams play both Wednesday and Saturday.  The trophy and prizes will be presented at the party this Saturday at 6.00!  Be there or be heckled.

Week 11 Results, Regular Seasons Winners, Playoffs!

Bon-Jovi!

Announcements:
-Tonight (Wednesday 11/23) there are no scheduled League games, but there is a hearty tradition of Pickup Tofurkey Ultimate.  If you call Asheville home or are sticking around for the gobbledays, come out from 7 - 10 to form teams and mingle with your opponents for a night of fun.
-It is with great sadness that we offer our sincerest condolences for the passing of Dr. Whitton, the father of our own Dumptruck, a staple of the AUC community.  Please, if you're around, come by the fields tonight at 7.30, when we'll be taking a large group photo and sending it to Dumptruck and his family to show our support.
-The playoff schedule is posted below.  We have two Wednesdays and a Saturday (12/10) of Double Elimination.  Do your best to clear that Saturday, as any team could win, and all teams will have scheduled games that day.  Afterwards there will be a AUC sponsored party at a local establishment, details forthcoming.

But now, last week's results!
at 5.30
Gold Rush bested Baby Blue, 15-9.
Maroon Bonobos hopped early on Graphite in the dark before the lights came on, and won 15-9.

at 7.00
Graphite won the double header against B. Blu, whose stars' absences were noted, 15-8 Graphite.  and P.P.P.P.. settled into post-season mode against Green&Tonic, 15-7 Purple.

at 8.30
the Red Eye Rockets won a squeaker over Tighty Whites, just taking the lead before the lights went out, 11-10.  and the Scruffy Unicorns were all apparently Occupying Some Street somewhere and had to Forfeit! vs. N. Blue Magic.  Let's hope they're all feeling better for the post season.

So, that leaves us with the following records after regular season play:
1.  Navy Blue Magic (12-1)
2.  P.P.P.P.... (11-2) (won head to head over Red)
3. Red Eye Rockets (11-2)
4.  Tighty Whites (7-6)
5.  Maroon Bonobos (6-7) (won head to head over Gold)
6.  Gold Rush (6-7)
7.  Graphite (4-9) (1-1 vs B.Blue, but +2 point differential!)
8.  Baby Blue Sky (4-9)
9.  Green & Tonic (3-10) (won head to head over Pink)
10.  Scruffy Unicorns (3-10)

After much mulling, here's the double elimination bracket we're following:
(I'm new to this blogging thing, but i'm pretty sure you can zoom in on this, print it out, etc..)

Week 9 and 10 Results!

Sorry y'all, I've been slacking.  First a few announcements:
-Green and Tonic won the Costume Contest.  The panel of 6 judges mainly appraised the team shots on the blog, and the only judge in attendance was slightly trampled by the giant Pink Unicorn on the field.  G&T won a $75 gift card to Asheville Pizza and Brewing, and they used it wisely.
-Only one more week of regular season play!  Then, we break from league play for the week of Thanksgiving. Instead, we hold ToFurkey Pickup on Thanksgiving eve (Nov. 24th), for everyone and anyone in town.
-When we come back, it's playoffs.  The exact format is TBA, but we'll post regular season results soon.
-The finals of the playoffs will be held on Saturday December 10th, with a party that night that the whole league must attend.  Attend the party!
-I'm collecting quite the Lost and Found.  Find me if you've ever left stuff at the fields.  Also, stop leaving stuff.

Week 9 (November 11th) RESULTS:
At 5.30
Games started pretty late.
Red 8 - Green 3
Pink Forfeit (Lady-less!) - Graphite W

at 7.00
Green 11 - Pink 8
Navy Blue Magic 14 - Baby Blue 12

at 8.30
Purple P. P. P.... 13 - Maroon Bonobos 7
Gold Rush 15 - Tighty Whites 14

Week 10 (November 9th) RESULTS:
at 5.30
Maroon Bonobos kept the game close against the N. Blue Magic, it was 8-5 Magic at half.  But then Magic started to really perform, as usual.  Final  N. Blue 15-8.
and
"The 'Yeah Baby Blue' vs 'Red Rockets' 5:30 game featured 'Yeah Baby' failing to complete a single throw on the first three possessions of the game which helped to enable the Red Rockets to take a quick 6-0 lead...'Yeah Baby Blue' finally made the decision to throw and catch but it was a bit too little and a bit too late as 'Red' took the win with the final official score 14-12...and then added one exhibition point after the hard cap."
-Andy Koenig   ...  Red 14-12.

by Andy Koenig.  Nice Boombox!

at 7.00
Purple P.P.P... squared off against the procacious Scruffy Pink Unicorns. Although Pink's new female recruits played admirably and are most welcome, PPPPP took half 8-3 and closed it with a solid "force flick" style defense. Purple 15-7.
and
the Red-Eye Rockets rubbed up against Maroon Bonobos. The Rockets stayed mostly in control, taking half 8-5 and closing out Red 15-9.

at 8.30
Gold Rush, suffering from some attendance issues, took on Green:
"It was a dark stormy night, and the rain came relentlessly as Green & Tonic took the field against Yellow and their all star pickups.  After a quick lead of 3 was gained, Green and Yellow battled it out until the lights went out and Green emerged victorious 13-8.  And there was much rejoicing."  - E.T.  Green 13-8
and
Tighty Whites fought Graphite.  A hard fought game, featuring uncanny attendance by most of White's players, including the return of their valiant co-captain.  Some of graphite's players were playing exceptionally well as they struggled to rally in the deadly drizzle.  But the depth of White's talent should be feared in the playoffs, as they ended it at 15-10.

See you all next week for the last week of regular season!

Week 8 Results

A splendid Halloween showing last week.  So glad everyone jumped early into the Holiday.  And, the fact that everyone was dressed rather silly did not stop folks from playing some really hard, good ultimate!
The RESULTS:

at 5.30
The Maroon Bonobos, on this night dressed rather hick-ly, faced off against the Navy Blue Magic.  The game started and ended tight, as multiple shots went up to Magic's favorite receiver, but he was just less than completely open this evening.  Bonobos took half 7-5, but Magic came out on three point streak to make it 8-7 and eventually closed it out in the cap, 12-10 N. Blue.
and Gold Rush went against the Red-Eye Rockets.  Both teams featured some potent offenses, and Gold looked ready to take half before pulling out the zone to slow down Red's cutters.  Red took half 8-7, and when the hard cap went off, Gold had two chances to tie it up.  Alack, they did not; Final: 15-13, Red.

at 7.00
Green and Tonic amassed on the sidelines early, looking extremely intimidating in their battlegear (see last post).  They faced Tighty-Whiteys, who were dressed as their favorite Nickolodeon alter-ego.  Cartoons defeat Cardboard, evidently, though Green was not visibly disheartened.  12-6, Whiteys.
and The Red-Eye Rockets sparred Navy Blue Magic, the night's anticipated double-header.  A very competitive game, Red took half and held the lead until the soft cap went on at 12-11, game to 14.  Navy Blue stepped up once more to snatch the W, however, 14-12 Navy Blue.

and at 8.30
Team P.P.P.P... met the arcade heroes of Graphite.  Although Purple felt they were in control, they were clearly having trouble against the zone, and found themselves at Universe point, 14-14.  Strazzler put destiny in Mr. Stagg's hands and launched the game winner deep over a bidding Manget/Raiden.  15-14 Purple.
and The Scruffy Pink Unicorns pranced with the Baby-Blue Babies.  Another close game, but Pink was clearly elevated by the appearance of their anthropomorphic deity at half-time (see video below), replete with 28 legs and wings.  They dispatched the infants, 12-10 Pink.

Check out all the great pictures!  Huge thanks to Forrest Samuels, Cathy Jones, and whomever grabbed my camera and took other pictures.  (Forrest has been contributing heavily to an AUC Flickr group that anyone can add to.)  And be sure to check out the team photos from Sunday's post.

See you tomorrow night!

Boo! (Week 7 Results)

Hey All,
Don't forget that tomorrow is Costume Ultimate!  Team pictures will be taken at half-times of all teams at every game, and the pictures will be reviewed by an impartial party.  The winning team will win something of value, as well as bragging rights.

And now, week 7's RESULTS:

At 5.30
Team P.P.P.P.P... tamed the Scruffy Unicorns, 10-5 Purple
and
"I'm pretty sure the wind won, followed by the navy blue team who scored 13 points to our 9." - Laura Boffa of Captain Underpants13 - 9, Navy Blue.

At 7.00
Team P.P.P.P... routed (in a nice way) Captain Underpants in the night's double-header, 15-3 Purple.
and the Bonobos (Maroon) lost to Red Rockets, 15-4 Red.

At 8.30
Yellowish notched one more over Graphite, 15-8 Yellow,
and Baby-Blue Sky held off a rally by the Green Greens.

Here are some pretty sweet shots of the 8.30 games by Forrest Samuels.

All Hallow's Eve Approacheth (Week 6)

Now featuring announcements that go at the beginning.

1)  Don't forget that costume ultimate is next week.  All games will be played regularly, but a prize will be awarded to the best costumed team.  Bring a light in dark just in case both teams dress as mimes.

2)  It seems stupid to ask this on a website, but if you're having trouble accessing the website or the schedule, let me know.  The schedule currently posted on ashevilleultimate.org is legit.

Now, Week 6 Results:

5.30
"Yeah Baby Blue wins vs Graphite Pencil 15-10 despite the distinct impression of Keith's cleats on the game's primary piece of plastic equipment." -Andy Koenig
and Yellow squeaked over the Scruffy Pink Unicorns on Universe Point, 15-14.

7.00
Team P.P.P.P.P... bested the understaffed Red-Eye Rockets, 14-10,
and Yeah Baby Blue beat the Scruffy Pink Unicorns in a fairly messy game, 12-7.

8.30
Maroon Bonobos conquered the Green Greenies, 15-5,
and Navy-Blue prevailed over Captain Underpants, 15-10.

Land-Ho Leaf-Peeping Pink Breasters! (Week 5)

...i.e., Happy Columbus Day, Autumn, and Breast Cancer Awareness to you all.

Last week's incredible results!

5.30
The Red No-Names defeated the Yellow No-Names, 15-12.  Both teams played extremely anonymously. Here's Andy Koenig's photographic testimony:
and, "The Scuffy Unicorns beat Captain Underpants by several whole numbers, but not too many (15-8?).  It was fun to play in the sunshine for a change.  Here's some live photos of the event:

Asheville Ultimate Fan Club, Members Only.
Deep-deeps don't run after the pull.

"Pink Sky", by Andy Koenig
Fuzzy Unicorns, Unite!"

Thanks Cathy Jones.  And pay no attention to the dissonance in times of day of her "live" photos.

7.00
Captain Underpants defeated Yellow No-Names, 13-8 (?)
and the Graphite Whatchas beat the Green Greenies, 15-7 (?)

8.30
Baby-Blue Sky scored a big W over the Maroon CleverName, 15-8.  Here's Andy:
"In a game that featured a match up of USA Ultimate Nationals bound 'Boneyard' teammates, the stars aligned perfectly in the Baby Blue sky and, after a month of chilling, the blueberry jell-o mold finally set for the Yeah Baby Blue Team on Wednesday (10/5) as they got off to a fast start against the Maroon team and, as Laura Boffa and others say, they never looked back. Yes, Baby likes to stay up late especially when they can use the 8:30 slot to notch their first in the left side column with a solid 15-8 win. Victory tasted especially sweet as birthday girl Hannah Kaminer came prepared with a basket full of raspberry sauce covered chocolate cake."
and Team P.P.P.P.P.P.P..... was bested by a well oiled Navy-Blue machine 15-9 (?), who featured a lightning fast Website designer, and who was still missing two other really good players also on their roster.  Watch out for Navy Blue, says I!

NEWS:
-Note all the question marks in scores.  This is because even though I'm out there all night, apparently I don't write squat down.  So correct me.
-Note all the assumed names.  I don't know what crazy team names you're all called.  So correct me.

Check the schedule for your game time, See you tomorrow night!

Week 4 Results and News

Week 4 Recap:
5.30 Royal Blue over Green, Purple over Graphite
7.00 Royal Blue over Graphite, Red over Scruffy Unicorns
8.30 Maroon over Yellow, White over Baby Blue

Re: White vs Baby Blue:
"Our score last night ended up 15-7 I think.  But if our opponents ever report a different score than I do, they're probably right.  For a more detailed report, they started out ahead, 4-2, but we got 'em with our zone and took half and "never looked back" as they say." - Laura Boffa

And here's the only picture I've received thus far (from Week 3):
NEWS:  In case you haven't walked into Target, Halloween is fast approaching.  Although we will hold regular scheduled games that week (Oct.26th), there will be a competition for the best dressed team and a neat-o prize for the winning team.  So get to brainstormingling!

See you tomorrow night!  Check the schedule for game times.
