Week Four Battles

Nessie, the Undefeated
 Yello,

First, an Announcement: We'd like to remind the community that Ultimate is technically a Non-Contact sport.  Although some contact is inherent in the nature of a competitive game, there are very real consequences to reckless play, and we don't have the pads or guards that other sports use to minimize injury.  Please, do your best to be aware of your surrounding players and opponents before you make that amazingly athletic play on the disc.

Speaking of amazing, there was truly some intense ultimate played out in Week 4.  Really tight games, right down to the wire.  I'm sure they're being replayed in your heads all week, but let's see if some words will do the games justice.

5.30
Chupagoyles vs. The Blue Oxen of Minch
"Chupagoyles came out the gates with some heat, goin up 3 or 4 running some hot zone. [Blue Oxen] triumphantly battled back and chupas took half 8-7. [Oxen] then went on a 5-2 run, playing some good d and capitalizing on a few chupa drops. Soft cap went off at 12-10, and the chupas were feeling the game slipping...but were not deterred. Determined and feeling the urgency of the conch, chupas got two quick breaks to tie the game at 12s as hard cap sounded. Doublay game point. A gifty pull put [the Oxen] in great shape and anticlimactically (for us) ended the late chupa run. Great game on both sides." -Harris
Blue Oxen 13 - 12 Chupagoyles

Man-Bear-Pig vs. Nessie
"Maybe 3 or 4 lead changes before they took the final one. Best game of the season so far." -Cosgrove
Nessie 14 - 12 Man-Bear-Pig

7.00
Guardin' Gnomes vs. Lil' Griffins
Lil' Griffins 14 - 12 Gnomes

Calvinosaurs vs. Funky Fly Foenixes
An exceptionally amazing game, with many many deep shots by both teams.  Finally, an extremely tired me fired to Sitler for the game ender.
Calvinosaurs 11 - 10 Foenixes

8.30
Guardin' Gnomes vs. Funky Fly Foenixes
"Good to see Kevin Vest back.  Still have not given up 15.  Small moral victories, don’t let anyone tell you they don’t matter." - Jason Rector
Foenixes 12 - 10 Gnomes

Week Three + Name-Calling

Howdy Ultimate People,

Check out the results from Week 3 and all the sweet monikers adopted by teams:

5.30
Chupagoyles (Team 3) vs. Puff the Magic Jackalope (Team 8)
"Beautiful 530 game, went up 4-1 and felt good. Bad guys came back within one, threatening their wonderful afternoon of joy and rainbows. Mythical powers were pulled together and half was taken 8-5 (i think). Soft cap went of at 11-8. Final score being 13-8, flesh-eating-dog-like-winged-scary-looking-beasts that are graphite in color. The mighty Chupagoyles became victors simultaneously ending their goose-egged win column. We basked in our after game glory, then looked each other in the eye, and sadly continued on with our lives outside of frisbee, although still flesh hungry. Flesh composed teams be weary (sic)....."  -Harris Woody
Chupagoyles 13 - Puff the Magic Jackalope 8

and
Funky Fly Foenixes (Team 10) vs. Lil' Griffins (Team 4)
"Good game. Matt and Leif invented a lefty connection. Birdo played amazingly with full-field sprints for Ds and bids. Ruth had some awesome hucks and posed a major deep threat as usual, which was even more badass since she was running a fever. It was stupid hot out for mid-March." - Rachel Winnerrrr
Foenixes 13 - Griffins 9

7.00
Blue Oxen of Minch (Team 6) vs. Guardin' Gnomes (Team 7)
Oxen 13 - Gnomes 8
and
Calvinosaurs (Team 1) vs. Nessie (Team 9)
Nessie 13 - Calvinosaurs 8

8.30
Blue Oxen of Minch (Team 6) vs. Nessie (Team 9)
Nessie 14 - Oxen 12
and
The Stackin Kraken (Team 2) vs. Man-Bear-Pig (Team 5)
"The Stackin Krakens ate their Wheaties and drank a ton of "Michael's Secret Stuff" and played a fun game against a fun team.  No wind meant for long throws and fast points.  The Krakens took half 8-2 and didn't look back on the way to a 15-8 victory.  The greatest day of the year merited a great day of ultimate all around." -Adam Morgan
Kraken 15 - Man-Bear-Pig 8

And here's a few photos taken by Jake Dewey of Puff the Magic Jackalope.
The Brewmaster seems open.

Kyle Carpenter throws pretty well for a soccer player.

Week One: Getting to Know One Another

Hey Ultimate People,

Twas brillig to see all the shiny happy people last week for a sensational season opener.  The weather tried its best to chase us off, but we were able to hold firm (but cautiously) and only miss an hour's worth of ultimate.

Which brings us to a few necessary announcements:
1)  Lightning Policy - When a flash is seen, we wait 20 minutes before games begin.  We highly recommend you leave the fields at this time, but even if you choose to stay, no games will be played while lightning is present.
2)  Officially: No Drugs or Alcohol are allowed at the fields.   (Bring discretion devices.)
3)  Even More Officially: No Dogs at the Fields.  Players with dogs will be asked to take their dogs home.  (My B)

And now for more fun announcements:
1)  The complete schedule is now up at ashevilleultimate.org.  Check it out and plan your Wednesdays!
2)  You'll see on the schedule, (and on the results below), that the teams right now are a bunch of numbers.  Lame.  Whoever thought numbers were cool should teach math.  We're giving teams until Week 3 to make up a team name having to do with some Mythical Creature.  Griffins has been taken by someone.  The Kraken is still up for grabs.  If you already have a team name that doesn't have to do with a Mythical Creature, that's fine, but know that everyone else will have cooler names.  If you don't come up with something by Week 3, we'll provide you one using my old Monster Manual (nerd alert!).

Finally, last week's results!

And here's a recap of Team 9's doubleheader:

"Team 9 vs Team 3
We (Team 9) rushed out to start with 4 quick points in a row.  We let off the gas, but took half 8-6 (8-7?).  Team 3 fielded 4 guys/3 ladies for the first few points of the 2nd half, with quite a few deep throws to Chanley for points.  Luckily, our ladies stepped up to the challenge and caught a few deep hammers to score.  End game: Team 9 wins, 14-8.
Team 9 vs Team 1
With quite a few of Team 1's star players benched due to injuries, Team 9 was able to grab some easy breaks and throw even more hammers to the end zone.  Score: 5-1.  At this time, Team 1 rallied a little bit and we traded points.  Team 9 took half 8-3 (8-4?).  Team 9's speedy, uninjured line, despite more than a few turnovers, easily won the game, which was called early on account of lightning.  Final score: 12-7." - Jack Derbyshire
